Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
