Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet
The speculation about the recent awards show has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
