Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
